How long SEO takes, and what to watch in the meantime

An analytics review presented to a team

Three months, six months, a year — the answer depends on what you count as a result. Here is what moves when, and which signs show the work is going in the right direction.

This is the second question, arriving right after price. The honest answer is a range, but the range can be explained: different work acts at different speeds, and it can be ordered so that something moves in the first month.

Three speeds inside one project

Technical fixes act fastest. If a page was closed to crawling, it can appear in search within a week or two. If speed was below any reasonable threshold, user behaviour improves immediately, and that shows in the metrics.

New content usually takes a month or two before a page finds its place. The first weeks are a trial as far as Google is concerned: it shows the page, watches whether people click and whether they stay, and only then decides. That is why a position in the first month is noise, not signal.

Competitive head queries are the slowest part. There it is not one page that decides but the weight of the whole site: plenty of content on the topic, links, brand. Half a year is normal; a year is not unusual.

What to watch before positions move

Tracking positions in the first month only frays nerves. These signs come earlier and are more reliable:

  1. Number of indexed pages. If it grows, the technical side is working. If it does not move, writing content right now is money wasted.
  2. Impressions in Search Console. Impressions come before clicks and before positions. A rising impressions graph alongside a falling average position is a good sign: you are appearing in new queries.
  3. The number of queries that find the site at all. When the list lengthens, your topical field widens. That is the base for later growth.
  4. Average position per query, not overall. The overall average falls when new weak queries join — it looks bad and means growth.

What pushes the result further out

The most common reason is not Google but waiting. The text is written but nobody approves it. The change is ready but the developer gets to it next month. Two weeks of approval times ten texts is five months of project.

The second reason is changing direction. SEO compounds: three months in one direction gives more than six months in two. If the topic changes every month, every month starts a new trial.

How to make the start faster

Three things that produce measurable movement in the first month. First, fix existing pages before writing new ones: a page already receiving impressions moves faster than one starting from nothing. Second, review the redirects — if old addresses return 404, working visibility drains away every day. Third, put first the queries where you already sit on page two: from page two to page one is a shorter road than from nowhere.

Those three come out of an SEO audit and do not require a large budget. The longer work — content, links, measurement month by month — is described on the SEO service page.
